Lanesborough Bridge links Lanesborough, in Co. Longford and the province of Leinster, with Ballyleague, in Co. Roscommon and the province of Connacht. Walk across and you change county and province halfway over the Shannon.

The town’s Irish name, Béal Átha Liag, means “the ford-mouth of the stones”, after the flagstones once laid across the river. A bridge here is recorded around 1000 AD, built by the High King Malachy, and a nine-arch stone bridge followed in 1706. The present six-arch bridge was built in the 1840s, probably to designs by Thomas Rhodes of the Shannon Navigation, with a section later replaced in concrete.

It’s the best spot in town to watch the river and, on a clear evening, the sun setting over Lough Ree.
