The “hot water stretch” is the stretch of the River Shannon just below the bridge in Lanesborough, named after the warm water once released by the town’s old power station. It’s known to anglers across Europe for bream, roach and pike.

The riverbank has been redeveloped with 60 angling stands, four of them for anglers with disabilities. The Lough Ree Angling Hub, set up in 2015, has hosted the World Predator boat fishing championships, and Ireland’s largest recorded pike is said to have been caught at Lanesborough.

Coarse fishing in Ireland usually needs no state licence, but check current rules with Inland Fisheries Ireland before you fish.
