Rathcline Castle is a ruin a short drive south of Lanesborough, near the shore of Lough Ree. It includes a tower house and a walled bawn with square corner towers, built in several periods.
The site was home to the O’Quinn “Lords of Rathcline”, later passed to the O’Farrells and then to the Lane family, who gave Lanesborough its name. It was badly damaged in the wars of the 17th century and was largely derelict by 1800.
The castle stands on private land and isn’t open to the public, but the ruins make a striking sight from the road.
