Lanesborough is an easy, relaxed day out for families, with plenty to do outdoors and short distances between everything.

Morning: take a boat trip on Lough Ree with Lough Ree Access for All (book now). Their purpose-built boat is fully accessible and suits all ages. Book ahead online.

Lunch: grab a pizza from Píosa (order online) at the Distillery Yard, or something from one of the cafés on Main Street.

Afternoon: let the kids loose in the riverside playground, then walk the Commons North Woodland loop. It’s mostly flat, about an hour long, and has nature and history boards along the way. Bring wellies after rain.

Got a car? Sliabh Bawn, 20 minutes away, has looped forest trails, a trim trail, a picnic area and a viewing platform, and the Corlea Trackway is 15 minutes away.
