Irish weather doesn’t have to spoil a day by the lake. Here’s how to spend a wet day in and around Lanesborough.

Morning: start with coffee and something homemade at Lanesbrew on Main Street, or speciality coffee and a bagel at Cata Coffee in the Distillery Yard. If you’re feeling active, book a reformer class at Precision Pilates (book a class).

Late morning: book a distillery tour and tasting at Lough Ree Distillery (book now), where you’ll try their Sling Shot Gin, Zesty Vodka and Bart’s Irish Whiskey. Book ahead through their website.

Afternoon: drive 15 minutes east to the Corlea Trackway visitor centre, where an Iron Age oak road is preserved indoors. It opens seasonally, so check times before you go.

Evening: a sauna session is even better in the rain. Book The Sweaty Yeti (book now), then get a pizza from Píosa (order online) next door, or have dinner at Sorrento.
