The Commons North Woodland Walk is a looped trail of about 3.2km through natural woodland along the River Shannon and the northern shore of Lough Ree. It starts from the car park in Lanesborough and takes around an hour.
The route passes lake callows (low meadows that flood in winter), wooded stretches with glimpses of the lake and a disused lime quarry, with information boards on local history and nature along the way. It’s mostly flat and suits families, and the playground in town is close to the start.
The lakeside paths can be very muddy and sometimes flood, so wear wellies or boots after rain.
