Lanesborough is one of Ireland’s best-known coarse angling centres. The stretch below the bridge is still called the “hot water stretch” after the warm water once released by the old power station, and it’s famous for big shoals of bream and roach. Pike over 20lb are taken on Lough Ree.

Where to go: the hot water stretch; the inlets upstream where the Feorish and Camlin rivers join the Shannon; and the bays of Lough Ree.

Permits: coarse fishing usually needs no state licence, but trout and salmon fishing does. Check current rules with Inland Fisheries Ireland.

Safety: the lake can turn rough quickly. Wear a life jacket on any boat and tell someone where you’re going.
